Dental implants: questions to ask before you decide

Dr A K Padhy Dental · 29 October 2026

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth root with a small titanium post that supports a crown, bridge or denture. Before deciding, these are the questions worth asking.

Model of a dental implant with a crown

1. Am I suitable for an implant?

Suitability depends on your general health, the amount and quality of bone in the jaw, the health of your gums, and habits such as smoking. Conditions like diabetes do not always rule out an implant, but they need to be well controlled. This is assessed with an examination and X-rays.

2. Is there enough bone?

After a tooth is lost, the bone in that area can shrink over time. If there is not enough bone, a bone graft may be suggested before or during implant placement.

3. What are the steps, and how long does it take?

Usually the implant is placed first, then given time to join with the bone, often a few months, before the final crown is fitted. In some cases a tooth can be removed and an implant placed at the same visit. Your dentist will explain the plan and timeline for your situation.

4. What will it feel like?

Implant placement is done under local anaesthesia. Some swelling or discomfort for a few days afterwards is common, and you will be given aftercare instructions.

5. How do I look after it?

An implant needs the same care as natural teeth: brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups. Gum disease around an implant can affect it, so daily cleaning matters.

6. What are the alternatives?

A missing tooth can also be replaced with a bridge or a removable denture. Each option has advantages and limits, and the choice depends on your teeth, your health and your preferences.

7. What will it cost?

Cost depends on the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, and the type of crown or denture. Ask for the full plan and cost to be explained before you decide.

Common questions

Am I too old for a dental implant?

Age alone is not usually the deciding factor. General health, bone and gum health matter more, and these are checked during an examination.

Can an implant be placed the same day a tooth is removed?

Sometimes. Immediate placement depends on the condition of the bone and gum, which is assessed before the extraction.
